Issue
Windows Server 2008R2 fails to install KB2999226 (Internet Explorer 11) update with error 9C48. IE11 is already present on the system and seems to be functioning fine. All other updates install with no issues.
Windows system logs record Event ID 20 Error:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems.
Cannot install KB2999226 I've recently gotten a craving to play Runescape again, and it told me I needed this update (KB2999226). It downloads fine, but when installing, the progress bar gets to about 1/3, and then says failed, and then brings me to a screen that says 'Some updates not installed', and of course KB2999226 is the only one listed.
Resolution
- However, when we download the hotfix and attempt to install it the installation never completes. The green status bar fills the entire bar but remains in the installing state. Also, if you check Task Manager the process wusa.exe consumes 40% CPU and the memory usage continues to climb indefinitely.
- Thanks for your reply, it was really appreciated. I was initially very hopeful that installing the suggested Windows Updates would help, however, I may have found a hitch in the plan. The updates KB2939087 and KB2975061 are for Windows 8.1 not windows 7 Enterprise (in System requirements it refers to Windows 8.1) while KB2919355 is marked as for Windows S.
- Open the command prompt as administrator and run following command:
FORFILES /P %WINDIR%servicingPackages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c 'cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart
This will remove IE11 from the system which may cause some errors in certain applications and system components. - Reboot the computer and install any necessary updates.
- Download and install Internet Explorer 11 offline installer
- Reboot the computer and install any remaining Windows updates.
